How we define and estimate “land use change” (LUC) is crucial for managing our precious natural resources. Accurate LUC estimates significantly influence decision-making and program development, directly affecting:
- Farmer and rancher livelihoods
- Biodiversity
- Water security
- Food security
- Energy security
- Other critical ecosystem services
However, achieving accurate LUC estimation is challenging due to a lack of consensus, disparate data sources and non-harmonized calculation methods.
Disagreement on how to assess LUC and lack of empirical assessment methods have also created controversy and additional scrutiny around the sustainability of row crop and livestock systems.
In addition, an increasing number of consumer goods manufacturers and other companies have made commitments to reduce or eliminate “LUC” in their supply chains to meet social, climate and nature targets. Since its inception in 2023, LUCI has held in-person and online workshops, presented at stakeholder events, produced several White Papers and reports, and supported peer-reviewed research efforts, reaching a diverse audience who otherwise were not included in the conversation. This project aims to define, identify and resolve the issues impeding precise land use change measurement.
